Dubuque Area Insight

  • Dubuque is known for its rolling hills and beautiful scenery. I have lived in Dubuque practically my entire life except for college. To be able to see clearly, a beautiful sunrise such as the one's we see, is remarkable. The air is clean, no smog, and I have enjoyed the quality of life.
  • The scariest ride in Dubuque! I have been on this elevator many times and it is frightening every ride up and down. This is the world's shortest and steepest scenic railway. It is about 300 feet in length and transports thrill seekers 189 feet from Fourth Street to Fenelon Place. The view at the top is phenomenal! Views of Iowa, Illinois, and Wisconsin plus the Dubuque business district and the mighyt Mississippi River! A must see tourist attraction!

Beecher's Ice Cream Parlor has been open at this same site for over 30 years. Whenever I go by I normally see people waiting in line to get their ice cream treat. Yesterday I just "had" to stop there and get a banana split. It was delicious! Put a stop at Beecher's on your bucket list.
  • This is a popular neighborhood park. It has very nice playground equipment, barbecue grills, picnic tables, and a lighted-in-line hockey rink. It seems that every time I drive by this park I see families and children enjoying themselves.
  • The Matters Creative Center is located in the Millwork district in downtown Dubuque. It is run by a non-profit organization and provides a variety of learning adventures. My granddaughter and I go there frequently to paint pottery. She is nine and helps me select colors for the items I paint. It is a great way to spend a couple of hours with my granddaughter. Put this on your bucket list.

The Dubuque Food Co-op is a community owned store located in the Millwork district where many of the old buildings are being renovated. The store features local, organic, and natural foods. The co-op opened in 2014. I stopped by here yesterday to do some shopping for my family. Great selection!!
  • Many times I have played golf on this 18 hole golf course. It is a very challenging course because it is rare that you have a level shot. Often you will feel like a billy goat making your shot standing on the side of the hill. But that really is the fun of this course. Add this to your bucket list.

I have been to the Bell Tower Theater to see many plays. My husband has been in numerous plays at this theater over the years. The plays are mostly funny plays and musical comedies. If you haven't been to a play at the Bell Tower Theater add this to your bucket list.
  • I loved going to the local Farmer's Market scheduled every Saturday from late spring to early fall. At 6:30 a.m. vendors are set up and ready to sell their produce, breads, meats, fresh flowers and plant, plus craft items. The shopping area encompasses four blocks of lookers and buyers. It is a social gathering for many and a shopping extravaganza for others! Vendors shut down about noon so it is important to get there before 11:30 for the "best selection."
  • Saturday afternoon I walked through this beautiful arboretum and couldn't resist taking pictures. This is a non-profit organization that is cared for totally by volunteers. This is the scene for many weddings. They have brick walkways with many names carved in memorial.
  • Every year tens of thousands of riders from all 50 states and many foreign countries ride over 500 miles across Iowa. They start by dipping their tires in the Missouri River to start and end by dipping their tires in the Mississippi River. It is the oldest, largest, and longest ride in the world. In 2010 it ended in Dubuque and we enjoyed watching the riders (including my son-in-law) coming through Dubuque and then dipping their tires in the Mississippi.
  • I am on the Manasseh House/Operation Empower Board - a non profit organization. The Manasseh Apartments are an 18 unit, one bedroom facility which will open its doors October 1st for single men with low to medium income. The onsite staff will provide the residents with supportive services such as: personal budgeting, resume development, and job seeking skills. I am attaching a video that was taken when this facility was strictly for women. The women are moving down the street to another building called the Salvia Apartments.

  • I go here a couple of times a year to pay my respect to our veterans and their families. It also makes me mindful of how thankful I am for our military and their families who are currently serving our country. My sons-in-law volunteered to install the replica armaments on a Vietnam-era Bell AH-1S Cobra helicopter gunship at the Veterans Memorial Plaza.

I love visiting this EB Lyons Center with the kids. I pack a picnic basket so we can have lunch before going on a hike. There are several levels of trails. Personally, I like going from the EB Lyons Center to Julian's Dubuque Grave. There is a beautiful view from the graveside and you can learn a lot about the history of Dubuque along the way!
